As air travel continues to rebound from the pandemic, Pittsburgh International Airport is receiving boosts from some ultra-low-cost carriers that plan to add or expand service to several markets starting next year.

Sun Country Airlines said Monday that it will increase seasonal service between Pittsburgh and Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport starting May 18. The budget airline will be upping its twice-weekly service to four days a week.

The added service in Pittsburgh is part of a larger, 11-route expansion planned by the Minneapolis-based Sun Country.

“We’re trying to turn Minneapolis into a two-airline market,” Sun Country CEO Jude Bricker said at the Skift Aviation Forum in Dallas on Nov. 16. “If you pay with your own money, you fly with Sun Country. If you fly on a corporate contract, you fly Delta.”

Sun Country’s expanded schedule will see the airline operate the Pittsburgh-Minneapolis route on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.

In addition to Sun Country’s expansion, Breeze Airways plans to resume flights from Pittsburgh to New Orleans and Hartford, Conn., and also expand service to Providence, R.I., and Charleston, S.C., and add seasonal service to Norfolk, Va.

The added service comes as Pittsburgh International is in the midst of a $1.4 billion modernization project that is scheduled to be completed in early 2025.
