Out & About: SummerSounds wraps up 20th concert series season

Another successful SummerSounds concert season is in the books.
The 20th year of Greensburg’s weekly free summer music series wrapped with an Aug. 30 performance by SHEL, a Colorado-based indie-folk group comprised of four talented sisters.
Sisters Eva, Hannah, Sarah and Liza Holbrook were “born in a five-year span and raised in a bohemian, art-loving family in Fort Collins,” according to their website. They took to music early, perhaps thanks to their songwriter father, and now craft songs that highlight their four-part harmonies and influences ranging from 18th-century composers to modern electronica.
An appreciative crowd gathered in downtown St. Clair Park as twilight fell on the pleasant late-summer evening. Though not too hot, it was definitely a dog day, as seemingly dozens of canines (and at least two cats) settled in with their owners.
Acoustic musician Jake Polcha played the opening set.
Prior to SHEL taking the stage, SummerSounds co-founder and organizer Gene James thanked the army of volunteers who work hard to make the annual series a success. The anniversary season had a reunion theme, as featured acts (other than the Russian Chicago tribute ensemble Leonid and Friends) were SummerSounds veterans.
The evening’s sponsor was Seton Hill University, represented by its executive director of primary gifts and community engagement, Annie Urban. Urban had the honor of introducing the headliners.
