Out & About: Love was in the air at Action for Animals event
Love was in the air at the 14th annual Love Is in the Air — Celebrating the Human-Animal Bond event hosted by Action for Animals Humane Society.
About 125 guests gathered Feb. 8 at Rizzo’s Banquet Hall in Crabtree to show their love for animals served through the organization.
In her welcome, board president Lisa Marie Corcoran said that supporters helped to provide life essentials and necessary medical attention for more than 750 animals in 2019.
Now, that’s amore!
Board Vice President Rita Whiteman told a sweet shelter success story: Returning from a recent vacation, she said, “I told (shelter manager LuAnn Hutcheson), ‘Lu, I need a dog — and she said, here,’ ” holding out a young female Norwegian elkhound.
Whiteman took her home and, in less than a week, Farrah had settled in.
Also present was Karen Highlands, founder of Lauren’s Wing, a charity named in memory of her late daughter Lauren Thompson that provides funds for surgeries and other lifesaving care for gravely ill or injured animals through AFA.
Tickets for Pittsburgh Penguins games are often seen at fundraisers around the area, but AFA took it a step further — a prize of two tickets included a ride on the Zamboni between periods.
Co-chairing the event with Corcoran was Robin Grace. Detention, the acoustic duo of Jane DeBone and Mandi O’Leary, provided entertainment.
