Out & About: Greensburg Art Center celebrates ‘Our Teaching Artists’

Artists who also share their talents by teaching at the Greensburg Art Center are being recognized in “Our Teaching Artists,” a group exhibition running through April 27.

During the March 23 opening reception, co-chair Pat Majcher explained that participating artists were invited to hang two pieces — one a current work and the other a favorite that has been previously shown — along with a self-portrait/biographical piece.

Joining Majcher in organizing the show were co-chair Bonnie Hoffman and members of the center’s gallery committee.

Artist Sue Pollins said she offered the idea for the artist self-portraits.

“I told them, ‘Do whatever you want, but make it no bigger than 81⁄2-by-11 (inches),’” she said. “I think it’s the best part of the show.”

The results included pencil drawings, paintings, collages, caricatures and even a cellphone selfie. In place of a bio, artist David Sparks used a quote from avant-garde photographer Man Ray.

Exhibiting artists are Jim Andrews, Suzanne Andrews, Ann Barish, Pam Cooper, Doreen Currie, Nancy Dalverny, Rose Hastings, Shirleah Kelly, Lee Klingenberg, Maureen Kochanek, Pat Majcher, Jackie Moreno, Denise Moore, Tom Niggel, Polly O’Hara and Peg Panasiti.

Also, Suzanne Panchura, Pollins, Renie Pollock, Cheryl Robertson, Cathy Rosensteel, Joe Schildkamp, Jerry Scorpion, Aline Sherwood, Rose Sovyak, David Sparks, Suzie Sparks, Nina Stahlberg, Eileen Sudzina and Carolyn Taylor.

The reception featured music by a string quartet of musicians from the Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra, tables laden with savory and sweet goodies supplied by members and a beer and wine bar tended by Bill Kiren.

It also served as the opening of a silent art auction that will conclude at the center’s Art on The Vine gala planned for April 26. Maura Koehler Keeney, Ron Korczynski and Kevin Kutz are the “Artists of Distinction” whose works are featured in the auction.

The art can be viewed at the center and bids can be made until April 26.
