A simple scroll through your Facebook news feed will remind you of how many lost, abused, abandoned and surrendered animals are out there.
Some of the lucky ones will end up at Action for Animals Humane Society in Derry Township, a no-kill shelter that — according to its website — has been matching people and pets since 1983. In addition, AFA also provides low-cost spay and neuter programs and information on reporting lost or found animals and cases of abuse or neglect.
All that takes money, so to support the mission, the organization hosted its annual sold-out Holiday Cash and Gift Bash on Nov. 16 at Huber Hall in Latrobe.
Lucky winners went home with a share of more than $6,000 in cash and prizes. Prizes included Pittsburgh Penguins and lottery tickets, along with retail and restaurant gift cards.
Just in time for Thanksgiving, one special prize was a 4-foot inflatable, lighted turkey covered in $500 in cash and 4100 in lottery tickets.
LuAnn Hutcheson is AFA executive director and shelter manager. Board members include Lisa Marie Corcoran, Rita Whiteman, Catharine M. Cathey, Betty Rushbrook, Regis Tomsey, Angela Grace, David McCleary, Kelly McCleary, Dean Miller, Ted Prettiman, Leanne Rubino and Mark Uebele.
