The Loyalhanna Watershed Association is sponsoring a Feb. 6 trip to Loyalhanna Dam, near Saltsburg, to learn about and view bald eagles.
Bald eagles are known to frequent the dam outflow in mid-winter. More than 20 of the birds of prey were found congregating there at a given time two years ago, taking advantage of plentiful prey such as gizzard shad.
Those joining the free morning trip are encouraged to bring binoculars and cameras to enjoy a close-up view of the birds.
Pennsylvania Game Commission warden Michael Papinchak will discuss the bald eagle’s successful return to the region, assisted by cleaner water and a commission reintroduction program.
A chartered bus will depart at 7:45 a.m. from the association’s Watershed Farm outside Ligonier and will return at about noon.
