Usually, you see lines of frenzied shoppers in stores in the weeks before Christmas, not immediately afterward.
But the release of a special limited-release cup sold at Target has led to long lines, campouts and people reselling the items for hundreds of dollars in some cases.
The limited edition Stanley Quencher cups, done in collaboration with Starbucks, were released recently and are being sold exclusively at Target. The cups come in bubblegum pink and “Target red” (for Valentine’s Day) and sell for $45 (and yes, they are currently sold out online).
Many people have shared videos on social media recently showing crowds of people rushing to grab whatever cups they could find. Some people were even camping out in the middle of the night to wait for the store to open.
One worker at a store said on TikTok that demand is so strong that they were keeping the items behind the counter and were restricting it to one per person.
There have even been a few arguments and fights. One TikTok video shows a group of shoppers arguing with someone who supposedly tried to cut to the front of the line. Another video said that a person who had tried to cut the line ended up trying to hop over the Starbucks counter to get a cup and security and eventually the police had to get involved.
“We are seeing an enthusiastic response to the Starbucks x Stanley Quencher and many stores have sold out,” a Starbucks representative said to Today. “It will not be restocked.”
So perhaps it’s not all that surprising to find that these specialty cups are now selling online for an exorbitant amount of money.
In fact, on eBay, these cups are selling anywhere between $98.95 to as high as $460. They’re going for anywhere between $250 to $300 on Poshmark. And you can also find them on Amazon, where they’re selling for as much as $139.93.
So if you really, really need one of these cups in your life, you can get one. Just be prepared to shell out a good bit of cash.
