It is Memorial Day weekend, a time to remember the men and women who gave their lives for their country. Here are some things that are happening in and around Pittsburgh.
Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum
Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum on Oakland is hosting a virtual Memorial Day service beginning at 11 a.m. on Monday.
The celebration opens with a broadcast from the museum in partnership with Gold Star Mothers, Spouses and Families, VVI and Shepherd’s Heart Veterans Home. It is followed by the annual fallen soldiers tribute slideshow memorializing Pennsylvanians killed in the current conflicts and military and veteran videos from the community, courtesy of the Veterans Breakfast Club, which is also hosting a virtual event on Memorial Day.

Sandcastle opens
Sandcastle waterpark in Homestead plans to open for its 32nd season on Sunday instead of Saturday which is a forecasted cold rainy day. It will also be open Monday. Located on the Monongahela River, it has 15 waterslide attractions, several pools and a children’s swimming area as well as a lazy river.
Many of the cabanas have been re-built with new foundations and roofs.
New food items include hot sausage sandwiches with peppers and onions, jumbo hot dogs and nachos with chicken or beef. The pizza stand will offer personal pizzas. Corn dogs will be made fresh. An Auntie Anne’s pretzel shop will be located by the wave pool.
There are plans are to have live entertainment on weekend nights at the Sandbar and possibly a food truck option.

Musical mayhem!
Arcade Comedy Theater presents “Musical Mayhem!” starring musician and comedian Missy Moreno and Pittsburgh-based artist kidmental. The Arcade at the Oasis event features “hip-hop infused-comedy jams.”
The hour-long outdoor show is at 7 p.m. Sunday at The Trust Oasis, a Downtown outdoor space sponsored by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. It’s located at at 133 Seventh St., between Penn Avenue and Fort Duquesne Boulevard.
There will be lawn seats available. Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs.

Senator John Heinz History Center
The Senator John Heinz History Center in the Strip District is bringing back its traveling exhibition “We Can Do It! WWII” on Saturday.
The exhibit visited cultural institutions throughout Western Pennsylvania. It explores the area’s impact on home, industrial, and battle fronts during the war.
The development of the Jeep, which was produced by the American Bantam Car Co. in Butler, and stories of Rosie the Riveter and the Tuskegee Airmen are part of the exhibit. There are also four life-like museum figures: Gen. George C. Marshall, Tuskegee Airman Lt. Carl J. Woods, Iwo Jima hero Sgt. Michael Strank and the Westinghouse Company-inspired Rosie the Riveter. A military jacket worn by Western Pennsylvania native, WWII veteran and actor Jimmy Stewart is also part of the exhibition.

Freedom Boat Club open house
On Saturday, between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Landing and Marina at Station Square on the South Side, Freedom Boat Club will be hosting tours of the dock. Guests will be able to see the fleet of boats that are available for rental.
