A local pizza has been named the best in the country.

Caliente Pizza & Drafthouse recently participated in 2019 World Pizza Championships in Parma, Italy, and Chef Eric von Hansen’s creation took top honors.

As a three-time champion at the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas, von Hansen is no stranger to cooking competitions.

Caliente owner Nick Bogacz attended the three-day event with von Hansen and the duo competed in several events together. It was von Hansen’s pizza called “Mee-Maw” that brought home the win.

The “Mee-Maw,” named in honor of his grandmother and mother, beat out 160 entries in the American division.

A limited number of the award-winning pizzas will be available beginning on May 1 at all five Caliente locations, which are in Hampton, Aspinwall, Mt. Lebanon, Bloomfield and Monroeville.
