Big Mac Day is here.
Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato has declared Friday as Big Mac Day in the county. To celebrate, local McDonald’s restaurants will offer $2 Big Mac sandwiches through Aug. 11.
The offer is available solely through the MyMcDonald’s Rewards app.
Big Mac Day is held annually on the birthdate of Michael “Jim” Delligatti, the inventor of the sandwich. He began test-marketing it on April 22, 1967, at his McDonald’s franchise in Uniontown.
The seven-ingredient sandwich saw success, and he then introduced it at three more of his Pittsburgh McDonald’s.
The Big Mac debuted nationally in 1968. Today, approximately 550 million Big Mac sandwiches are sold each year in the United States. It is sold in more than 100 countries around the world.
Delligatti contributed the famous secret sauce to the Big Mac.
“I would make the sauce in the restaurant by hand, mixing all the ingredients together myself. It was hard work, but the customers loved it,” Delligatti once explained, according to McDonald’s.
The Big Mac also inspired The Economist magazine’s “Big Mac Index,” which is an annual comparison of foreign currency values against the U.S. dollar.
