Share your Pride with rainbow-hued swag

Look around this month and you’re bound to see rainbows.

And they aren’t all in the sky celebrating the end of a gloomy rainstorm. The rainbows seen on apparel and home goods are in celebration of Pride Month.

LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer/questioning) Pride occur in June in big cities and small towns nationwide.

The majority of Pride events are held in June to commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion in New York City on June 28, 1969, which most historians consider to be the birth of the modern LGBT movement.

At the time, police raids on bars catering to LGBTQ patrons were common, but that night, the patrons of the Stonewall Inn fought back, the website notes.

Making donations

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, many retailers are offering Pride items this month. Proceeds from the sale of some of the items are being donated to charitable organizations supporting the LGBT community.

Among the brands giving to the cause are American Eagle, Disney, Nike, Adidas, Abercrombie & Fitch, Harry’s and Morphe.

“Macy’s is celebrating the 10th year of its annual Pride + Joy campaign which includes merchandise, special in-store events, support and participation in Pride Parades nationwide and this year, a charitable round-up campaign benefiting The Trevor Project. With a purchase from INC International Concept’s limited-edition Pride Collection, Macy’s will donate a portion of the retail price to The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ youth.

While the collection is not available in any of the Pittsburgh-area Macy’s stores, items are available on macys.com. Customers can buy online and ship to any Macy’s location and pick up within 3-5 days or, of course, have items shipped directly to their homes, a company spokeswoman says.

Now through June 17, Macy’s customers are invited to round up in-store purchases (up to 99 cents) and donate the change to The Trevor Project.

“In partnership with The Ally Coalition, Bombas is donating 40% of all donation socks from purchases made through the end of June directly to homeless LGBTQIA+ youth in need,” its website states. The special-edition Pride socks feature a unique rainbow-colored space dye.

Other retailers

Goodr is offering up “Let Me Be Perfectly Queer” sunglasses in celebration of Pride month.

Starbucks’ rainbow tumblers share the love, as do the ubiquitous IKEA bags — now in a rainbow hue.

And Old Navy stores (and online) are stocked with assorted colorful Ts and tanks celebrating Pride Month.
