U.S. Steel Corp. is planning to lay off almost 200 workers from its Great Lakes Works facility just outside of Detroit.
The Detroit Free Press reports the Pittsburgh company said in a filing with the state of Michigan that “market conditions and recent reductions in customer demand” are the reason for the lay offs.
In the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act filing, U.S. Steel said it has already laid off 48 workers in late July and early August. Additionally, the company said “further layoffs are likely to commence on Sept. 30.”
The company said the lay offs are “currently expected to be temporary,” but added “the layoffs may exceed 6 months’ duration.”
Last week, while visiting Royal Dutch Shell’s multibillion-dollar ethane cracker plant in Beaver County, President Donald Trump said had he not been elected president the natural gas, coal and steel industries would be far worse off.
Since early March 2018, when Trump announced tariffs on steel and aluminum, U.S. Steel’s stock has dropped 73%.
