Low-cost airline carrier Spirit Airlines will start nonstop service between Pittsburgh International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport on June 22.

The company announced Wednesday that the new service will connect Pittsburgh to the New York City area with one-daily roundtrip flight between the two airports. The new Pittsburgh service is part of a multi-city expansion, where Spirit is also launching four new daily flights from Newark to Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and Oakland, Calif.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate our 5th anniversary of serving Pittsburgh with new nonstop service to Newark, N.J.,” John Kirby, the airline’s Vice President of Network Planning, said in a press release. “We’re grateful to PIT and our Steel City guests in Western Pennsylvania for enabling our continued growth in the community.”

The departing flight will leave Pittsburgh at 5:40 p.m. and arrive at Newark at 7:02 p.m. The return flight will depart from Newark at 8 p.m. and arrive in Pittsburgh at 9:18 p.m.

Spirit becomes the first ultra low-cost carrier to travel between Pittsburgh and the New York metro area, which is the most well-served destination from Pittsburgh International Airport. There are currently about 26 daily weekday flights from Pittsburgh to the New York area on American, Delta, and United airlines.

Spirit started service at PIT in 2017, and has carried more than 2.5 million passengers. Pittsburgh International Airport CEO Christina Cassotis said this makes Spirit the airport’s leading ultra low-cost carrier. It also provides flights to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Tampa, Orlando, Ft. Myers, and Ft. Lauderdale in Florida, as well as one weekend flight to Cancun, Mexico.

“Having a low-cost option to the New York City market is important for our region and I’d like to thank Spirit for recognizing the demand to the New York/New Jersey area both from business and leisure travelers,” said Cassotis.
