Altoona-based Sheetz is celebrating the opening of its 100th store in North Carolina.

The store in High Point, N.C. opened on Jan. 31. At a grand opening event, the company gave $2,500 to Special Olympics North Carolina and the same amount to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Carolina.

“Sheetz is deeply grateful for the remarkable growth we’ve experienced in North Carolina, thanks to our committed employees and loyal Sheetz freakz,” Sheetz President and COO Travis Sheetz said. “We are truly humbled by this milestone and look forward to continuing our momentum in the Tar Heel State in 2019 and beyond.”

Founded in 1952 as a single small dairy store, Sheetz has grown to 588 stores in Pennsylvania and five other states — Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio and West Virginia. It now employs more than 18,500 employees, with more than half, about 10,300, in Pennsylvania.

The company operates 275 stores in its home state of Pennsylvania. Its first location outside the state opened in Cumberland, Md. in 1976.

Sheetz opened its first store in North Carolina, in Walkertown, in April 2004. Expansion in the state followed the growth of Sheetz in Virginia.

The company said it plans to open about 30 more stores in 2019.
