The Grateful Dead’s fan community is the stuff of rock-music legend.
“Deadheads” followed the band across the country, catching shows when they could get hold of a ticket and creating a colorful scene in every city the band played.
Old and new fans in recent years have gotten back together, not just at concerts where former band members and tribute acts are recreating the Dead’s music but at movie theaters, for the annual Grateful Dead “Meet-Up At the Movies” events.
The one-day showing presents one of the Dead’s thousands of live concerts in a cinema setting.
This year’s Grateful Dead meet-up is scheduled for lead guitarist Jerry Garcia’s birthday, Aug. 1, and a new distribution agreement will help turn it into an international event.
Rhino Entertainment inked a deal with Trafalgar Releasing that will expand the meet-up to more theaters across the globe.
Tickets for this year’s meet-up will go on sale on Thursday, which is also when officials will announce what concert will be shown in theaters.
Last year’s show was a 1989 concert recorded at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.
”It’s been incredibly exciting to watch the Grateful Dead Meet-Up at the Movies evolve over the last eight years, with the audiences growing larger and more eclectic with each installment,” said Mark Pinkus, president of Rhino Entertainment who oversees Grateful Dead Properties. “Partnering with Trafalgar Releasing will now take us to the next step in this evolution, with even more diverse cinema offerings and worldwide distribution. I fully expect the ninth annual meet-up being the biggest yet and look forward to attending on Aug. 1.”
