Jam on Walnut, a monthly series of concerts in Pittsburgh’s Shadyside neighborhood, is set to open on June 26 and continue through September.

The retail portion of Walnut Street will be blocked off during the event, which runs from 7 to 11 p.m. BB Steal – ’80s Live kicks off the series on Saturday, followed by Dancing Queen (July 24), Township Road (Aug. 21) and the Delaneys (Sept. 18).

All of the stores, restaurants and bars along Walnut Street will be open to attendees, with multiple local food trucks scheduled to participate.

Admission is free. Those over 21 will receive a wristband to purchase alcoholic beverages from a tent, with proceeds from the sales and direct donations benefiting Animal Friends and the Bow Wow Buddies Foundation.

A longstanding summer tradition, Jam on Walnut was canceled last year in the pandemic. Cody Hoellerman, chief community engagement officer of Animal Friends, is expecting a large crowd this year, as rising vaccination rates have removed restrictions.

The money will go to “fund the everyday work that’s taking place at Animal Friends and go right into our mission and different outreach programs,” said Hoellerman. “This is going to be a really big event for us to get back onto the fundraising event scene.”

Animal Friends, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit, was founded in 1943, offering an alternative to euthanasia when combating pet overpopulation.

The Bow Wow Buddies Foundation is a nonprofit that seeks to fund urgent medical care for sick and injured dogs.
