Canadian pop-punker LØLØ finds love hurts, but it inspires songs

LØLØ will open the concert for Boys Like Girls on Oct. 23, 2023, at the Roxian Theatre in McKees Rocks.

Canadian pop/punk singer LØLØ has fallen in love — literally.

About six months ago, the 25-year-old fell face first after leaving a man’s house, breaking her jaw, chin and nose in the process.

“I wish I could tell you that it was all fake, for the song, but yes, that happened,” LØLØ said recently from California. “That happened and it was literally the worst pain of my life. It was so bad, oh my god. But it gave me a song idea.”

That song turned out to be her latest single, “faceplant,” which came out on Friday. (If you catch her live, it’ll feature an interpolation of the Killers’ “Mr. Brightside,” which was rejected for her official release.) All these months later, she still hasn’t eaten an apple, and she’s only recently tried a carrot.

Unfortunately for her, it wasn’t the first time she found out that love hurts.

“I find that whenever I’m hanging out with a guy that I’m not supposed to, that I know this isn’t the right thing — like, this guy is not good for me — I end up falling. I once fell down the stairs at a bar, so this did happen to me before,” she said. “It was the same kind of situation and I fell down a flight of stairs. I didn’t actually hurt myself, well, I bruised myself, so it wasn’t as intense as this.

“I think it’s a sign from God. I think it’s ‘stay away from these guys,’” she adds with a laugh.

Bringing breakup anthems and other catchy pop-punk songs, LØLØ will be visiting Pittsburgh on Oct. 23 as part of Boys Like Girls’ Speaking Our Language tour. That show, at the Roxian Theatre in McKees Rocks, also features State Champs and The Summer Set.

LØLØ has already released three other singles this year, “5,6,7,8” featuring pop-punk duo girlfriends, “omg” and, most recently, “hot girls in hell.”

“When I wrote it, I wrote the first side of it when I was really sad and depressed, and then I wrote the second half when I was (ticked). I kind of love that because I feel like, in a breakup, you go through all these different emotions, half the time you’re feeling like a pathetic loser and you just miss them. And in the second half, you’re like, wait a minute, I hate them! They’re going to hell!” she said with a laugh. “So I feel like it’s a pretty accurate representation, for at least me, of all the emotions you go through, the ups and downs, just all over the place.”

It’s also proven to be her favorite song to perform on this current tour.

“I’m still a pretty new artist, so I’m like unknown, and I like that I start it soft. The song starts slow (with) just guitar, and I see some people trying to put up their lights, and I’m thinking in my head, ‘Nope. It’s about to turn crazy,’” she said with a laugh. “And then I love the moment when it does, and everybody is like, ‘Oh (expletive) yeah!’”

Shining light on her innermost feelings didn’t come easy. “Even the idea of writing songs before I ever wrote one, I was like, ‘Yeah, I don’t think that’s for me,’” she said.

But once the self-described “oversharer” got over the hump, she found it to be therapeutic. And as for how her parents feel about some of her songs?

“They’re always like, ‘Are you OK?’ And I’m like yeah. Obviously, I’m dramatic. I embellish things sometimes for songs, when it’s based off of something,” she said. “Or then I’ll just tell them that it’s embellished even though it’s not sometimes. I’m like, yeah, no, this didn’t actually happen. Narrator: It happened.”

With influences like Paramore and fellow Canadian Avril Lavigne, LØLØ is set to release her first full album next year after several EPs over the past few years.

“As a music lover, I love when my favorite artist put out albums because I love the story of it and I love album tracks, the B-sides, slower stuff,” she said. “Obviously for me and the climate that we’re in these days, it’s better as an artist to release a single because it’s the only one to be focused on.

“I love writing slow songs, but I love being on stage and jumping up and down and going crazy, so I’ve been just playing a lot more upbeat songs, but I’m very excited for the album.”

LØLØ has already toured with A New Found Glory and teamed with Simple Plan on a 20th anniversary remake of their “I’m Just a Kid.” Next up on her dream project wish list would be touring or collaborating someday with Green Day (who she’s met before) or Lavigne.

”I’ve posted a video of me doing ‘Skater Boi” when I was like 7 or something,” she said. “So I’m ready for that collab one day to repost that video.”

And as for that stylized name of LØLØ? That came about because of another singer named Lolo, a singer from Tennessee who’s released four albums and been featured on a song by Panic! at the Disco.

”After I chose mine — I had already put out my first song — it came to my attention and then I was like, ‘Oh (expletive), I should probably put slashes in my Os or something so it doesn’t get more confusing. I hope she doesn’t hate me and want to kill me,’” she said.

“But, funny enough, she actually reached out to me and she’s like, yo, I love your music, I checked you out. And I was like, ohmygod, I love your music. And so we’re friends now, Instagram friends, but there’s no bad blood or anything. Our music is super different and whatever, so I mean it’s still probably confusing to some people, but hopefully we help each of us get a little more fans when people get mixed up and look it up.”
