“The Steagles” will be the subject of a West Overton Museums author talk/book signing.

Fans of history and sports will find common ground as author Matthew Algeo presents his book, “Last Team Standing: How the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles — The Steagles — Saved Pro Football During World War II,” at West Overton Museums.

Admission is $5 at the door for the 6-8 p.m. May 2 program at the East Huntingdon historical site.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing at the event.

The book tells the tale of the National Football League facing a shortage of players during World War II, as players turned soldiers.

The Cleveland Rams were forced to fold, and the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles — unimaginable today — merged in 1943 to form the team the Steagles.

Algeo’s book looks at football, life during the war and the Greatest Generation.

As a journalist, Algeo has reported from four continents, and his stories have appeared on some of the most popular public radio programs in the United States.
