Children 10 and older will find “cutting-edge experiences in art, tech and learning” in the new Museum Lab at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh.

A grand opening ceremony is set for 9:30 a.m. April 27 in the Lab, adjacent to the North Side museum, in the former Carnegie Free Library of Allegheny, 6 Allegheny Square East.

Museum Lab will be open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. that day, with special features including performances and photo opportunities.

According to the Children’s Museum, the new Museum Lab will feature:

• Opportunities to work with makers on everything from furniture to apps, experiment with cutting edge technology in the creation of art, climb three stories on a unique artwork installation and collaborate on one-of-a-kind art installations.

• Make Lab, featuring wood and metal working tools and equipment, such as a CNC router, laser cutters, and a soldering station;

• Tech Lab, featuring digital making experiences created in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University, such as 3-D printing, coding and virtual reality experiences;

• Studio Lab, featuring interactive experiences with long-term artists-in-residence experimenting with cutting-edge artwork;

• Gymlacium in the Stacks, opening June 8, an art installation created by Manca Ahlin, transforming the former Carnegie Library steel bookshelves into a three-story artwork that kids can climb, slide down, swing on and chill in;

• Professional development programs for educators.

With creation of Museum Lab, the Children’s Museum will have the largest cultural campus for children in the United States.

Partner organizations include Allies for Children, SLB Radio Productions, Carnegie Mellon University Arts Management Program and Entertainment Technology Center, University of Pittsburgh Education Department, Reading is Fundamental and Pittsburgh Public Schools.

The design and construction team includes design architect, Koning Eizenberg Architectur; executive architect, Perfido Weiskopf Wagstaff & Goettel; and construction manager, Mascaro Construction.
