Weird, wonderful 'BH90210' winks at its fans

Jonna Miller

Who says you can’t go home again?

Those paraphrased words were uttered last night by Jennie Garth at the end of the latest TV time machine — the “BH90210” on Fox.

You remember Jennie Garth, right? Kelly Taylor? “Beverly Hills, 90210?” Yes, that’s the one.

As billed by Fox: Jason Priestley, Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling, the original stars of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” the ’90s teen drama that defined Southern California life, returned to Fox on Wednesday night. Only this time around, the concept of a series reboot is taken to a whole new meta-level.

The cast’s reunion came with a twist: the seven former teen idols are playing heightened versions of themselves — with a healthy dose of irreverence — “inspired by their real lives and relationships with each other,” per Fox.

The six-episode mini-series will follow the crazy kids as they get caught up in Spelling’s idea to reboot the old show, within the confines of a new show, which is really a reboot of the old show. Got it?

Does it work?

Yvonne Villarreal of Los Angeles Times says, “Jokes aside, news of the reboot — and its unusual premise — has drawn mixed reactions from fans: excitement to see their faves, misgivings that it will sully the memory, and plain old confusion about what they’re in for. After all, no one forgets their first TV love. And for many, ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ was just that.”

On time.com, Judy Berman: “The decision to do something completely different from teen dramas new and old goes a long way for BH90210. And though the show is in some senses even sillier than its inspiration, the honesty of a story about seven aging C-list celebrities cashing in on nostalgia is unexpectedly endearing.”

What say the fans? Plenty, of course.

It’s safe to say the stars are in on the joke and playing it to the hilt. Proof of that — the funniest scene from the premiere:

And the best scene? The final one … RIP Luke Perry. Grab a tissue:
