TV Talk: Streaming/cable spigot gushes with return of ‘Yellowstone,’ ‘Waverly Place’

“Yellowstone,” TV’s most-watched scripted series, returns in November but without star Kevin Costner (presumably his character will die off-screen).

After a lackluster summer of premieres due to last year’s dual actors’ and writers’ strikes, production has caught up and there will be no dearth of scripted originals on cable and streaming this fall including:

“American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” (Sept. 17, FX; next day on Hulu): Producer Ryan Murphy spins off his “American Crime Story” franchise with this crime-infused sports entry focused on the former New England Patriots player.

“Agatha All Along” (Sept. 18, Disney+): Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) joins with other witches to try to get back her powers in this sequel series to “WandaVision.”

“The Penguin” (9 p.m. Sept. 19, HBO, Max): Colin Farrell stars as Oz Cobb (aka The Penguin) in this limited sequel series to “The Batman.”

“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” (Sept. 19, Netflix): Drama based on the case of real-life brothers convicted in 1996 of killing their parents.

“Twilight of the Gods” (Sept. 19, Netflix): Animated story of Norse mythology from producer Zack Snyder.

“A Very Royal Scandal” (Sept. 19, Prime Video): Dramatization of Prince Andrew (Michael Sheen) getting interviewed by a journalist (Ruth Wilson) in 2019.

“La Maison” (Sept. 20, Apple TV+): French drama about a haute couture family-run fashion house.

“Penelope” (Sept. 24, Netflix): A 16-year-old (Megan Stott) moves into the woods.

“Everybody Still Hates Chris” (10 p.m. Sept. 25, Comedy Central): Animated reboot of the 2005-09 UPN/CW comedy with some of the original cast reprising their roles (Terry Crews, Tichina Arnold).

“Midnight Family” (Sept. 25, Apple TV+): Med student saves lives aboard her family’s private ambulance in this Spanish-language drama set in Mexico City.

“Grotesquerie” (10 p.m. Sept. 25, FX, next day on Hulu): 10-episode Ryan Murphy series about a detective (Niecy Nash) investigating heinous crimes with the help of a nun/journalist (Micaela Diamond).

“Nobody Wants This” (Sept. 26, Netflix): Love story about an agnostic podcast host (Kristen Bell) and an unorthodox rabbi (Adam Brody).

“The Last Days of the Space Age” (Oct. 2, Hulu): Eight-part period dramedy set in 1979 Western Australia during the Miss Universe pageant as the U.S. space station Skylab comes crashing down to earth.

“Where’s Wanda?” (Oct. 2, Apple TV+): Dark German-language comedy about parents searching for their missing daughter.

“La Maquina” (Oct. 9, Hulu): Spanish language drama about a boxer (Gael Garcia Bernal) who hits a low point in his career.

“Citadel: Diana” (Oct. 10, Prime Video): Italian spinoff of action-adventure series “Citadel.”

“Teacup” (Oct. 10, Peacock): Horror thriller, inspired by the Robert McCammon novel “Stinger,” set in rural Georgia starring Yvonne Strahovski and Scott Speedman.

“Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” (Oct. 10, Netflix): Animated series about the adventurer.

“Disclaimer” (Oct. 11, Apple TV+): Seven-part limited series psychological thriller from writer/director Alfonso Cuaron about a journalist (Cate Blanchett) who receives a novel where she’s the lead character.

“Nemesis” (Oct. 16, Hulu): Dutch conspiracy thriller about a prosecutor and detective searching for those who commit financial crimes.

“Passenger” (Oct. 17, Britbox): Detective Riya Ajunwa (Wunmi Mosaku) investigates a series of inexplicable crimes in a small town.

“Hysteria” (Oct. 18, Peacock): Julie Bowen, Anna Camp and Bruce Campbell star in this 1980s-set story of a metal band that comes under suspicion following a series of murders and kidnappings.

“Rivals” (Oct. 18, Hulu): Based on the Dame Jilly Cooper novel, it’s a story of social elites in 1980s England.

“Before” (Oct. 25, Apple TV+): 10-episopde psychological thriller about a child psychiatrist (Billy Crystal) who encounters a boy with a connection to the doctor’s past.

“Wizards Beyond Waverly Place” (8 p.m. Oct. 29, Disney Channel; on Disney+ Oct. 30): Sequel series to “Wizards of Waverly Place” about Justin (David Henrie) mentoring a new wizard-in-training.

“Citadel: Honey Bunny” (Nov. 7, Prime Video): India-set action-adventure spinoff of “Citadel.”

“The Day of the Jackal” (Nov. 7, Peacock): Eddie Redmayne stars as an assassin tracked by a British intelligence officer.

“Cross” (Nov. 14, Prime Video): Based on the James Patterson book series, detective and forensic psychologist Alex Cross (Aldis Hodge) uses his skills to get into the minds of killers.

“Say Nothing” (Nov. 14, Hulu): The story of Irish Republican Army members in the 1970s and the lengths some go to for their beliefs.

“Landman” (Nov. 17, Paramount+): Billy Bob Thornton stars in an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and billionaires during a Texas oil boom.

“Interior Chinatown” (Nov. 19, Hulu): Based on Charles Yu’s novel, this 10-episode series follows a background character trapped in a police procedural drama.

“The Madness” (Nov. 28, Netflix): Media pundit (Colman Domingo) stumbles on a murder in the Poconos and becomes the No. 1 suspect.

“Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” (Dec. 3, Disney+): Kids get lost in space, encounter a mysterious figure (Jude Law).

“Creature Commandos” (Dec. 5, Max): Adult animated DC Comics series about a team of incarcerated monsters sent on missions too dangerous for humans.
