Joe Manganiello hit the Rex Theater instead of high school prom. Here's why.
Mt. Lebanon’s Joe Manganiello joined Jimmy Kimmel Live Wednesday night to relive high school horrors and preview his new show, “Moonhaven” which airs on AMC+ next year.
A Carnegie Mellon University grad, Manganiello is most commonly known for his roles in “Magic Mike” and “True Blood.”
During the interview with guest host Sean Hayes, Manganiello discussed how he got into acting around his teenage years at Mt. Lebanon High School. He earned one of the lead roles in the musical “Oklahoma” in his first high school musical during his senior year.
“I guess you would consider me the Billy Elliot of my high school” Manganiello said. “I had a lot of moving parts in high school, I was a three-sport captain, and I made my own movies.”
He said he planned on playing college basketball and go into a federal law enforcement career.
“So I get cast in ‘Oklahoma’ and I decide to do it,” he said. Despite warnings from coaches not to stray from sports, acting became the new priority. That worked out pretty well.
Manganiello went on to retell his senior prom experience and how he decided to skip the event to watch a director’s cut of “Blade Runner” at the Rex Theater in Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood, after a forgettable homecoming dance.
“I had a horrible experience at homecoming,” he said. “Then prom rolled around and I said, ‘I’m not spending 500 bucks to have another horrible time.’”
Of the Rex, he said: “There was this great, old independent theater.” He drove there and watched “Blade Runner” alone.
“Everybody was like, ‘prom’ and I’m like ‘Blade Runner.”’
During the interview, Manganiello talked about the difficulties of acting and being away from his wife, Sofia Vergara.
“I travel so much and that is really the hard part about this job,” he said. “It takes you away from each other. You love each other so much, you just want to be with each other.”
