A full-sized harp that a man lugged to Pittsburgh’s Point State Park on Wednesday afternoon — before disrobing and jumping into the freezing river — had been stolen, police said Thursday.
The harp, which is worth about $30,000, was stolen from a Bethel Park home, Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Cara Cruz said. She did not elaborate. The man who jumped into the river was not identified.
Cruz referred all questions to Bethel Park police, which she said is investigating the burglary. Those officers did not respond to phone calls or email Thursday seeking comment.
The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, which manages Point State Park, plans to file criminal charges related to the stolen property, Cruz said.
Representatives from that department did not respond to phone calls or email Thursday.
First responders — including Pittsburgh police officers, paramedics, River Rescue crews and park rangers — rushed to Point State Park near the confluence of Pittsburgh’s three rivers just before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. They had received reports of a man being “in the water,” Cruz said.
Police did not say exactly where he entered the water.
The man was taken to UPMC Mercy hospital in stable condition. A UPMC spokesperson was not available for comment Thursday.
Medics from River Rescue, Medic 14, Rescue 2 and Unit 501 provided medical care at the scene.
