Butler County is once again reaping the benefits of the commonwealth’s natural gas impact fee. This unique Pennsylvania fee — which is essentially just another tax on the industry — provides funding every year to the state’s county and municipal governments. This year, Butler County received the seventh highest distribution amount at more than $1.6 million.
Every county receives an annual impact fee allocation, regardless of whether or not natural gas drilling occurs in the county. The impact fee dollars can go toward a variety of projects, including road and bridge improvements, infrastructure (such as sewage, technology, storm water or water treatment) upgrades, public safety equipment, and improvements to recreational and green spaces enjoyed by the public.
In speaking with my local government colleagues, I know how important this funding is. I’ve seen firsthand how this annual allotment has taken numerous important projections from the proposal stage to being a reality, improving our communities and benefiting all who live within our county’s borders.
The natural gas industry continues to be a powerhouse for our state — creating jobs; promoting economic growth and opportunities; cementing Pennsylvania’s role as a global energy leader; and generating significant tax revenues that are helping to fund critical projects throughout the state.
