A new initiative in Heidelberg has a simple goal: to ensure no one in town has to struggle with everyday household tasks alone.
The borough has launched a program called “Heidelberg Helpers,” a neighbor-to-neighbor volunteer initiative created to connect residents who could use a helping hand, with those who are able to volunteer their time, said Councilwoman Dottie McCartney.
“At its core, Heidelberg Helpers is about building stronger connections between neighbors,” McCartney said. “We want this to be a program that fosters kindness, support and community pride here in Heidelberg.”
Here’s how it works, according to McCartney: volunteers can sign up to offer assistance with tasks such as lawn care, snow shoveling, trash or bulk item set-out, light housekeeping and outdoor tidying up.
Residents in need can submit a form describing what they need help with, and when.
McCartney then pairs requestors and available volunteers.
Volunteer and resident signups are online, and there are also paper forms available at the borough office at 1631 Railroad St.
The program is for Heidelberg residents only.
Volunteers follow guidelines with the tasks, McCartney said, and residents review guidelines and sign a release before receiving help.
“This keeps the program neighborly, straightforward and community-focused,” she said.
