One person died in a head-on collision Tuesday morning in Washington County, authorities say.

The Washington County Coroner was called around 5:30 a.m. to Route 40, near the road’s intersection with Valley View Road, in North Bethlehem on a report of the crash, a 911 dispatcher told TribLive.

The corner’s office identified the victim as 18-year-old Chayse Allen, of South Strabane Township, who had been operating the vehicle when the accident took place, officials said.

Allen had been driving east when his vehicle collided with another traveling west in the 1600 block of East National Pike, according to the coroner’s report.

Early reports indicate a vehicle caught fire after the head-on crash and both vehicles became engulfed in flames, authorities said. Several first responders were dispatched to the scene.

It is unknown if Allen was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, the report said.

Police were detouring traffic around parts of Route 40 as of 6:30 a.m., authorities said.

A general store and office sits near the intersection of Route 40 (East National Pike) and Valley View Road, which is located in a largely residential area that bears a Scenery Hill mailing address.

The investigation is ongoing.
