Westmoreland happenings: History program about electricity, flea market, more

Fundraisers

• The used bookstore at the YWCA of Westmoreland County, 424 N. Main St., Greensburg, has added evening hours on Mondays. Hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and the first Saturday of each month. Proceeds benefit YWCA programs.

• Mon Valley Paws will have a flea market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 28 at St. Vincent De Paul Hall, 1701 Grand Blvd., Monessen. Refreshments and baked goods will be sold. Donations for the sale will be accepted from 3 to 7 p.m. June 27. Details: 724-493-8305.

• A fundraiser to benefit Mon Valley Paws will be from 3 to 8 p.m. June 30 at Steel Plate Restaurant, 321 Schoonmaker Ave., Monessen. A percentage of sales will be donated, pet food donations will be accepted and there will be a basket auction. Details: 724-493-8305.

History

• Baltzer Meyer Historical Society will sponsor a program, “How and Why Did Electricity Come to Westmoreland County,” from 6 to 8 p.m. June 29 at Harrold Hall, 642 Baltzer Meyer Pike, Hempfield. Don Lachie will be the speaker, and there will be displays of vintage light bulbs and Christmas lights.

Special event

• First United Church of Christ, 1008 Harrison City Export Road, Penn Township, will host a free presentation June 29 with mini horses that provide therapy to schools, libraries, nursing homes and festivals. An outdoor service will be from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m., and the presentation will be at 11 a.m. in rear of the church. The public is welcome. Reservations required for the horse show. Reservations: 724-744-2731 and leave your name, telephone number and the number of attendees.

Submissions from nonprofit organizations for Briefly Speaking should be emailed to cpinto-smith@triblive.com. Include a complete address and daytime phone number. Submissions are due at least two weeks prior to the event. Each announcement is printed once; there is no fee.
