Within two hours of discovering a bat in our children’s bedroom, my wife and I spoke on the phone with a dispatcher and medical professional at the Department of Health, someone from the Pennsylvania Game Commission and our local game warden. The warden came out at midnight to remove the bat and take it for rabies testing.
In this time of cynicism, I would like to give a big shoutout to all the civil servants out there doing public service. Earnest people doing their jobs to provide us a functioning government. It’s not sexy, it’s much maligned, but it sure is nice to have around when you need it.
