Hampton Shaler Water Authority officials said they are working with a vendor to repair a leak at the authority’s water tower in Sharpsburg.

The leak occurred April 19 at the tower along the Allegheny River.

The authority released a statement about the incident Wednesday .

“HSWA is planning repairs to occur early next week, as materials, coordination with vendors and the governing body (the state Department of Environmental Protection) for emergency permits have to be finalized,” the authority said. “During repairs, the tank will be offline, and alternative sources will be utilized.

“After repairs are made, an approved tank coating will be applied, cured at least 24 hours, disinfected and the water tested prior to returning to service.”

The repair company, which had not been publicly announced by the authority as of Thursday , also will investigate the leak’s cause.

Linda Novak, an administrative assistant at HSWA, said the leak has not impacted service and will not impact customer billing.

Residents are billed only for water that passes through their meters, Novak said.

It was unclear how much water the tower holds or how much has leaked.

Borough Manager Christine DeRunk said the authority owns the water tower, and she referred all questions about it to HSWA.

The borough posted the authority’s water tower announcement on its Facebook page.
