As someone who recently became a registered voter here in Pennsylvania, I understand the consequential nature of our upcoming election and the critical role our civic participation plays in shaping our future. However, new laws seek to suppress our voices, affecting millions of people, including college students like me.

If we seek an inclusive democracy that values every person’s hopes for the future, we must reject dishonest attempts to selfishly hold on to political power. These efforts not only damage the integrity of our democracy but may also prevent our elected leaders from representing the diverse interests of our state. Pennsylvania can only confront these threats through an uncompromising desire to maintain our long history of free, fair and transparent elections.

Thankfully, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act hold politicians accountable and prevent bad actors from tarnishing our most essential rights. These bills institute bipartisan, commonsense safeguards that reduce gerrymandering, protect our election infrastructure, and squash suppressive legislation and undue influence. I’m grateful Sen. Bob Casey and other leaders throughout our state have supported these bills and fought for Pennsylvanians on democracy issues at large. As we stand at this critical juncture, I urge them to continue their work so that we can preserve our unique voice.
