More than 100 spectators showed up Saturday at the Leechburg Elks club to watch one of the most celebrated events in Scouting — Pinewood Derby Day.
More than 30 scouts from Leechburg Cub Scout Pack 553 revved up their engines — gravity — as they competed in six divisions.
The Scouting tradition has been around for more than 70 years and the original rules introduced in 1953 required each car be crafted from a single block of wood.
At Leechburg, the derby cars must weigh no more than 5 ounces.
The designs varied from the whimsical, with a blonde-haired girly car, to the sporty, with racing stripes.
Awards were given in two categories: Most Unique and Best Design.
Scouts from grades K-5 were eligible to compete.
