Three dogs died in a house fire Wednesday afternoon in Monessen, authorities said.

No people were in the home on Summit Avenue during the fire, and no other homes were damaged because of how far back the home is on the property, Monessen fire Chief Delmar Hepple said.

“There was heavy fire when I arrived, and crews went to work pretty good to put an aggressive stop on it,” Hepple said.

Additional fire departments were called for support because of the hot weather, Hepple said. The firefighters initially assumed people might be home because televisions were on in the basement but did not find anyone.

The fire started just after 2 p.m., he said. Officials were seeking the homeowner Wednesday, and the cause of the fire is being investigated.

Firefighters from Monessen, North Belle Vernon, Carroll Township, Charleroi, Rostraver and Stockdale, along with Mon Valley EMS, responded.
