A Butler County woman claims she shot and killed her boyfriend over the weekend in self-defense, police said.

Amanda Hughes, 26, of Cranberry, was charged Sunday with one count of criminal homicide, Cranberry police Lt. Chuck Mascellino told the Tribune-Review.

Hughes was arraigned and now is being held in the Butler County Jail. She was denied bail on Monday.

Cranberry police responded to reports of a disturbance in the 500 block of Brandywine Drive shortly after midnight Sunday morning, police said. Hughes sought help at a neighboring residence; the gun used in the shooting laid in her driveway.

“She advised the officer there with her that she had shot her boyfriend,” Mascellino said.

Police found Anthony Smith, 30, of Cranberry, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said. He was flown to Allegheny General Hospital, where he died at 1:49 a.m.

Hughes told officers there was a physical altercation, and she shot Smith in self-defense, police said.

Mascellino added, however, that “physical evidence seemed to contradict those statements.” He declined to further comment.

Hughes has a preliminary hearing March 3 before Magisterial Court Judge Kevin J. Flaherty.
