Leaders at Camp Guyasuta are eyeing renovations to the McGinnis Education Center, the massive dorm and conference facility at the entrance to the wooded grounds in O’Hara.

The Boy Scout-run camp received word last week that it received a $100,000 state grant through the Gaming Economic Development Tourism Fund.

Money will be used to upgrade the shower facilities in the McGinnis dorm.

“We are very excited to do this project,” Ranger Mike Daniher said.

“The grant will allow us to change two existing restrooms that are communal into single unisex stalls with sink, toilet and shower.”

Total cost is expected to be $175,000.

Work is scheduled to be completed by spring 2024.

Daniher said the renovations will provide greater flexibility for groups that utilize the camp.

Space will not be expanded, rather reconfigured, Daniher said.

“This allows us gender-neutral restrooms to accommodate all kids,” Daniher said.

The McGinnis Center often is rented by corporations and organizations for meetings, retreats and team-building activities.

Camp Guyasuta was among several groups to share more than $2.7 million from the Gaming Economic Development Tourism Fund for community development projects.

In the same round of funding, the Etna Community Organization received about $173,800 for building upgrades to the Etna Center for Community. Shaler-Hampton EMS received $291,000 to purchase a new ambulance.

“State investments in local economic projects bring major returns to our region in terms of revenue and in the quality of life for residents,” said state Sen. Lindsey Williams, D-Allegheny, whose district includes O’Hara.

“Each of these projects is an investment in the people and the neighborhoods of District 38.”
