Library program features filmmaker

Join filmmaker Tony Buba for a showing and discussion of his 1988 documentary “Lightning Over Braddock: A Rustbowl Fantasy” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 5 in Johna’s Room at Monroeville Public Library, 4000 Gateway Campus Blvd.

Buba’s first full-length feature chronicles the decline of Braddock, which once flourished as “Pittsburgh’s shopping center.” The film concerns a director (Buba, playing himself) trying, without much success, to make a movie with a crazy street hustler named Sal, who considers himself responsible for Buba’s (modest) success. Buba has a fascination with the idiosyncratic details of daily life, and uses his formidable sense of humor to document the decay of industrial America.

Buba has been producing documentaries since 1972 in both long and short formats. His films have been screened at Sundance, Toronto, Berlin and other major international film festivals. He has had one-person exhibitions at more than 100 universities and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art and Carnegie Museum of Art.
