An Oakmont resident is among this year’s winners at the Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards, held Oct. 1 in Philadelphia.
Joe Wos took home the statue in two categories: Host/Moderator and Educational Content Short Form. He is the host of “Cartoon Academy,” a TV program that teaches the art of cartooning.
The show is produced at WQED’s studios in Pittsburgh, the same location as the groundbreaking public television series “Mister Rogers Neighborhood.”In his acceptance speech, Wos acknowledged the rich history of WQED-produced educational programs for family audiences.
“Cartoon Academy” had been nominated in three categories this year. This was Wos’ second year nominated as best host and his first win. The show is now entering its third season.
“This was an unexpected but deeply appreciated honor,” Wos said. “It is a recognition not just of the hard work by the entire WQED team, but also of the importance and popularity of the Cartoon Arts.”
“Cartoon Academy” airs on PBS affiliates and within the PBS app.
Wos has been a cartoonist for over 30 years. Besides his work in television, he is perhaps best known for his illustrated mazes, which have been featured in many books and in the syndicated feature “MazeToons” distributed by King Features Syndicate.
He teaches cartooning at Central Catholic High School and also draws the iconic Charlie the Tuna character for StarKist.
