Springdale has a new police chief, and he’s a familiar face to borough residents.
Derek Dayoub was elevated from captain to chief this week by a 5-1 council vote with one abstention.
Dayoub replaces George Polnar, who retired in June.
A law enforcement member for 20 years, Dayoub will receive $85,000 per year in a four-year contract, council President Mitch Karaica said.
Dayoub had been earning $33.50 per hour, which comes to nearly $70,000 per year. He had been acting chief for three years earlier in his tenure.
“I’d like to get our manpower back up,” Dayoub said when asked of his immediate goals. “I’d like to get more involved with the community, such as events for kids.”
The police department has one vacancy.
Voting in favor of the promotion were Karaica, Brittni Bair, Eileen Miller, Jason Overly and Michael Ziencik. Voting against was Shawn Fitzgerald, citing budget concerns. Councilwoman Antoinette Robbins abstained.
Council also voted to activate the borough’s civil service commission to see whether hiring a new police officer will fit into its budget.
Bruno Moretti was appointed to the civil service commission to fill the unexpired term of Scott Redman. The term will expire Dec. 31, 2028.
Council also will advertise to fill a commission vacancy with one or two new members.
