More traffic delays are likely along Route 28 beginning Wednesday, when single-lane restrictions take effect near O’Hara and Aspinwall, PennDOT announced.
Work will begin at 6 a.m. in the northbound lanes and is expected to be ongoing through mid-October.
Restrictions will be in place from Exit 7 (Delafield Avenue off-ramp) to Exit 9 (Blawnox off-ramp).
Crews from Swank Construction Co. will work around-the-clock on paving and road reconstruction.
Work is part of a $15.32 million project to upgrade about 3.5 miles of Route 28 between Aspinwall and Harmar.
The project includes minor road widening of the southbound lanes near RIDC Park.
When complete, southbound Route 28 will be two lanes near the Fox Chapel off-ramp, along with an exit-only ramp to Fox Chapel Road.
Work includes reconstruction of the Delafield Avenue ramps, concrete preservation work on the Fox Chapel ramps, paving work near RIDC Park and bridge preservation.
There will also be new lighting, stormwater features, guardrail upgrades and rock fall area cleanouts.
Single-lane restrictions will be in effect with crews maintaining at least two lanes of traffic in each direction during peak travel times. Ramps will be closed as needed, with much of the work being done overnight.
Work is expected to wrap up at the end of the year.
