Pirates farm report for Aug. 31, 2022: Cal Mitchell goes deep in Indianapolis win

INDIANAPOLIS (Triple-A, 63-60) used the long ball to defeat Louisville (Reds), 6-2. LHP Zach Matson (5.46) started and went two innings and allowed a two-run homer and three hits. CF Cal Mitchell (.339) smashed a two-run homer, his ninth, in the top of the fourth to tie the game. RHP John O’Reilly (5.37) struck out two and gave up three hits in three innings and LHP Joe Jacques (4-1, 4.18) earned the win, going two innings and giving up one hit and striking out three. C Carter Bins (.195) added to Indy’s lead with a two-run homer, his ninth. SS Ji-hwan Bae (.300) singled in two insurance runs in the top of the ninth and RHP Hunter Stratton (5.50) finished the game with two shutout innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts. 1B Mason Martin (.217) and RF Diego Castillo (.281) each went 2 for 4.

Next: Thursday at Louisville (Reds), 6:35 p.m.

ALTOONA (Double-A, 60-61) was shut out by Akron (Guardians), 4-0. Altoona’s bats were quiet as the team could only muster six hits. SS Liover Peguero (.257), C Endy Rodriguez (.348) and RF Connor Scott (.246) each hit doubles but were unable to score. 2B Nick Gonzales (.252) went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. RHP Aaron Shortridge (1-4, 6.47) got the loss, going five innings, giving up seven hits, striking out three and allowing four runs, none earned as LF Lolo Sanchez, 3B Andres Alvarez and Peguero each had an error. LHP Nick Dombkowski (3.12) threw three innings of shutout ball, allowing two hits, and RHP Colby Selby (2.60) allowed one hit and struck out one in one inning.

GREENSBORO (High-A, 53-65) was crushed by Winston-Salem (White Sox), 10-3. The Grasshoppers jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when 1B Jacob Gonzalez (.288) knocked in a run on a ground out and 3B Eli Wilson (.259) drove in another run on a sac fly. C Abrahan Gutierrez (.256) went 2 for 3 and SS Mike Jarvis (.205) went 1 for 4 with a double. RHP Nick Garcia (3.91) went six strong innings, allowed no runs on three hits and struck out five. Winston-Salem then smacked the Greensboro bullpen around. RHP Cristian Charle (2-1, 3.71) allowed three runs on three hits in one inning and got tagged with the loss. RHP Eddy Yean (6.97) went two-thirds of an inning and gave up five runs on four hits while RHP Logan Hofmann (6.75) and LHP Denny Roman (8.24) each allowed a run and a hit.

BRADENTON (Low-A, 63-58) stymied a late rally to beat Fort Myers (Twins), 8-7. LHP Anthony Solometo (2.95) went 4.1 innings, gave up one run on two hits and struck out five. SS Tsung-Che Cheng (.278) gave Bradenton the lead in the fifth with a two-run double. The Fort Meyers offense then went after the Marauders bullpen. RHP Will Kobos (1-0, 10.80) got the win despite allowing two runs on one hit in the sixth inning. The Marauders broke the 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer from LF Tanner Tredaway (.222), his first. RHP Wilber Dotel (10.38) allowed no hits but gave up six free passes and two runs with one out in the ninth. RHP Darvin Garcia (5.82) was called upon to get the last two outs but could only get one while allowing two more runs on two hits. RHP Johan Montero (2.93) finally closed the door, getting the final batter to pop out. 2B Termarr Johnson (.313) went 3 for 3 and had a bases-loaded walk, scored a run and stole a base.
