Motorists who use Route 28 near Harmar and Fox Chapel should expect traffic tangles beginning Wednesday.
In Harmar, the on-ramp from eastbound Route 910 that carries traffic north on Route 28 will close short-term, PennDOT announced.
Weather permitting, work there is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. and will go around-the-clock through 6 p.m. Thursday.
The work is part of a $27 million highway restoration project between Harmar and Creighton.
The ramp reconstruction will leave traffic to be detoured through Cheswick.
The detour will take drivers past the closed ramp, where they will turn left onto Gulf Lab Road; then to Russelton Road, where they will turn left; then to Hite Road, where they will turn right. They can make a left back onto Route 28.
Motorists who are heading west on Route 910, from Target or other spots along Freeport Road, still will be able to access the ramp to the expressway.
Near Fox Chapel, traffic woes will last longer.
Work on the southbound off-ramp from the expressway to Fox Chapel Road is expected to begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
It could remain closed through mid-August while crews reconstruct the ramp and pave it.
Traffic will be detoured to the Highland Park Bridge. There, drivers can bear right toward Aspinwall and turn left onto Freeport Road, which leads back to Fox Chapel Road.
At the same time, drivers will have to deal with a long-term, single-lane restriction that is set to begin along southbound Route 28 in the same area.
The restriction is part of a $15 million project to improve and widen Route 28 between the Delafield Avenue exit and the Harmar line.
Construction there includes minor road widening of the southbound lanes near Exit 8, reconstruction of the Delafield Avenue ramps, concrete preservation work on the Fox Chapel ramps, milling and paving work on the RIDC Park ramps and bridge preservation work.
There also will be lighting upgrades, green stormwater features, new guardrails, rockfall area clean-outs and fence repairs.
Ramp closures will occur as needed through the end of the year.
