The question of whether Harrison police Chief Michael Klein can retire later this year and be rehired on a part-time basis will be a topic for discussion by the township commissioners Monday.
The board last month held off on voting whether to allow Klein to retire Oct. 28 and return three days later at a reduced salary of just under $86,000.
Township Manager John Pallone said a vote is likely to take place during the commissioners’ meeting.
Resident Frances Brown was pleased the vote was delayed because she said township constituents were due time to ask questions and air concerns.
“Will he be allowed to work overtime and receive overtime pay as a part-time employee?” Brown asked.
Brown said she has many more questions for the commissioners, including whether Klein will continue his work on the Allegheny County Drug Task Force.
Klein, township police chief for 28 years, currently earns an annual salary of $107,500.
If his part-time role is approved, he would work 32 hours a week and would be an at-will employee, meaning he could be let go at any time without a reason.
His pension would freeze Oct. 28 at its current level. Officials said he could collect both a salary and his pension.
According to the township website, there are 12 full-time officers in the department, including four sergeants.
During last month’s meeting, board members Gary Meanor, Chuck Dizard and Jamie Nee voted to hold off making a decision. Commissioner Eric Bengel and James Erb wanted the vote to be taken.
The board held an executive session in recent weeks to hash out details, which will be further discussed Monday.
Pallone said the aim is to keep Klein on board while township officials develop a plan for his ultimate replacement.
“We have the opportunity to develop a responsible transition plan,” he said.
Klein could not be reached for comment.
