Westmoreland County election officials on Wednesday will break ties in the more than 300 deadlocked races in the May primary.

The tie-breaking process will begin at 10 a.m. at the courthouse and be conducted through a random casting of lots. Candidates in each of the tied races will select numbered pills to determine winners.

Officials said races for 177 races with 1,064 candidates seeking seats on the Westmoreland County Republican Committee were deadlocked.

For a seat the Westmoreland County Democratic Committee, there were 157 races, involving 615 candidates, that ended in ties.

Both will be decided Wednesday.

Elections officials said those races involved write-in candidates.

The county elections board scheduled a special meeting on Friday, June 10 to certify results in those races.
