A 27-year-old woman stole a car in a York County convenience store parking lot Sunday that had a 2-year-old girl inside, prompting an Amber Alert until the girl was found safe hours later in Philadelphia, according to court records released Monday.
Tiffany Campbell left her 2-year-old daughter Mya Campbell in the car Sunday afternoon while she ran inside the Royal Farms in Springettsbury Township to get some food, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
The affidavit said Maria McKenzie, 27, of York stole the Campbells’ 2005 Suzuki SUV around 3:23 p.m. while Tiffany Campbell was still inside Royal Farms. The keys were in the ignition and the engine was running.
Surveillance camera footage captured McKenzie getting into the Suzuki and driving away, the affidavit said. McKenzie’s father reportedly worked with police to identify his daughter in the footage.
The affidavit said McKenzie was last seen driving the SUV, with Mya Campbell inside, east on Route 30. McKenzie has ties to the Kensington area of Philadelphia, where the SUV and Mya Campbell were later found.
There is no known relationship between McKenzie and the Campbell family, police said.
Police said McKenzie was pulled over at 5:57 p.m. on the 700 block of East Clearfield Street in Philadelphia. Mya Campbell was still in the backseat, unharmed.
The affidavit said McKenzie ran away from the traffic stop and is still at large as of Monday morning.
According to online court records, McKenzie is charged with five felonies, including kidnapping and false imprisonment.
