Davis Beville’s decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal after three seasons at Pitt looked like a sound choice Monday when he committed to Oklahoma, where he has a chance to be the Sooners’ No. 1 backup quarterback.

Beville will be one of four players competing this season for the No. 2 job behind presumed starter Dillon Gabriel, a transfer from Central Florida. Beville is the only one of the four backups with significant collegiate playing experience.

The other three are Micah Bowens, who transferred from Penn State last year and has not thrown a pass at either school; incoming freshman Nick Evers, a four-star prospect who was rated the No. 4 dual-threat quarterback in the nation by Rivals.com; and walk-on Ralph Rucker, who completed 2 of 2 pass attempts in his freshman season last year.

Before he decided to leave Pitt, Beville was the quarterback for most of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Dec. 30 against Michigan State after Kenny Pickett opted out and Nick Patti suffered a shoulder injury in the first quarter. Beville completed 14 of 18 passes for 144 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The interception was returned 78 yards for a touchdown by Spartans linebacker Cal Haladay with 22 seconds left, ending Pitt’s late rally in a 31-21 defeat.

Beville’s career stats at Pitt included 22 completions in 32 attempts for 237 yards.

After participating in spring practice at Pitt this year, Beville was behind Kedon Slovis and Patti on the quarterback depth chart.
