Alle-Kiski Valley campus clippings: Heilman comes up aces at Merychurst

Jarrett Heilman (Freeport) has been a steady force for the Mercyhurst baseball team.

The sophomore crafted a 7-0 record in 10 games — eight starts — through a complete-game 14-2 victory over Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action April 29.

In seven innings that day, Heilman gave up six hits and walked three while striking out nine. It was his second complete game of the season.

For the season, Heilman owned a 2.61 ERA through a team-best 48¹⁄₃ innings. He struck out 64 and walked 17 with just five extra-base hits — three doubles, two home runs — surrendered.

Mercyhurst was 27-14 overall and 14-10 in conference play heading into the start of a four-game series with Slippery Rock on Friday.

Washington & Jefferson: Evan Sante (Plum) continues to produce for the Presidents. He led the team with a .359 batting average (42 for 117), 10 home runs and 42 RBIs through April 30. He went 11 for 24 (.458) with five home runs and 13 RBIs during a recent seven-game hitting streak.

Men’s volleyball

Penn State: Cal Fisher (Riverview/Penn Hills) was selected a second-team All-American on Monday by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The senior opposite hitter was second team for the second year in a row. Fisher, also named to the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association first team, led Penn State with 47 aces this season and ranks behind only Olympians Aaron Russell and Max Holt on the program’s all-time list with 142. He added 289 kills, a .326 hitting percentage and career-bests in digs (158) and blocks (38). Penn State finished its season at 23-4.

Softball

Thiel: Senior outfielder Casey Buechel (Deer Lakes) finished her season with a .300 batting average, 12 RBIs and eight multi-hit games. She recorded eight extra-base hits: five doubles, a triple and two home runs. Buechel scored 12 runs for Thiel, which finished 8-18 overall.

Women’s lacrosse

Edinboro: Freshman Maggie Anderson (Plum) led the Fighting Scots with nine goals. The four-year high school letterwinner with the Mustangs recorded a hat trick April 21 in a 10-8 victory over Ursuline. Her first collegiate goal came in a 6-3 win over Felician on March 8.

Men’s lacrosse

Westminster: Junior attacker Nick Hubner (Plum) scored a pair of goals in a 10-7 loss to Saint Vincent on Wednesday in the PAC Tournament semifinals. The scores give him 12 goals in 10 games. The Titans (10-5) will begin play Wednesday in the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament.

Men’s tennis

Grove City: The Wolverines (16-2, 7-0 PAC) captured their second straight conference title with a 5-1 victory over Saint Vincent on April 30, and Michael Odrey (Valley) played a significant part.

In the title match, he defeated Saint Vincent’s Jon Oskin, 6-4, in the first set at No. 3 singles and was leading the second set when the match was called after Grove City had clinched the title. He also was a part of the winning No. 2 doubles team.

The Wolverines earned the PAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championship.

Men’s track and field

Cal (Pa.): Senior Jalen Cloud (Kiski Area) finished ninth in the triple jump (14.34 meters/47 feet, 1 inch) at the Penn Relays on April 29. Competing against a number of Division I jumpers, Cloud recorded his top mark on his third attempt. The winner, Isaac Haywood from Norfolk State, leaped 14.91 meters (48-11)
