North Park, South Park golf courses open for the season
More proof that spring has finally arrived.
Not only is Tuesday opening day for the Pirates at PNC Park, but it’s also a day that golfers can finally hit the links at two of Allegheny County’s most popular public courses.
The county has declared both the North and South park golf courses open for the season. Daily operating hours are 6 a.m. to dusk.
The courses have just gone through maintenance and aerating, the annual process of punching little holes into greens and fairways that opens up growing room for grass roots and helps keep turfgrass healthy.
So what kind of shape are they in?
“Honestly, the golf course is outstanding,” said Ralph Butera, co-manager of the North Park course. “I’ve been out on the course and the greens look great and the fairways look great. In the last two weeks, we re-did a lot of the sand traps and the greens held up fine.”
Meanwhile, the South Park course survived the heavy winter snowfall in good shape, according to course manager Bill McGrady.
“It’s in excellent shape,” he said. “We just finished aerating two weeks ago and the course is in really nice shape. It’s very wet, but condition wise it’s very nice.”
Senior golf permits for people age 60 and older for the 2022-23 season are available for purchase online or in-person at the North or South park clubhouses from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The cost is $80 for county residents and $100 for non-residents.
Disabled veterans with identification cards can purchase golf permits in person at the clubhouses from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday-Thursday. The cost is the same; $80 for residents and $100 for non-residents.
Concessions at both courses are open seven days a week serving beer, hot dogs, chicken fingers and fries among other items. Concessions will accept cash and debit cards.
