Letter to the editor: The border is not ‘open’

Two or three times a week we see letters here start with incorrect and hyperbolic claims about open borders and the millions pouring in from Mexico. The similarities in how these are written suggest a campaign or, dare I say, conspiracy.

In truth, this administration has maintained the border policies of the previous administration, and our Border Patrol continues its difficult job with the same effort and funding.

While those letter-writers may indeed believe that the border is open and fear all sorts of bad guys are coming through, the rest of us know this for what it is, a dog-whistle for white nationalism and a rallying cry for the Republican extreme. Please give it a rest.
