Bradford Woods will receive more than $55,000 to improve stormwater drainage on Willow Road, the Allegheny County Conservation District announced on Dec. 13.
The Dirt, Gravel and Low Volume Road program, which the conservation district administers, benefits projects on or around roads that are unpaved or are paved and receive less than 500 cars per day.
The latest award expands on previous Willow Road grants awarded in 2017-2018 and 2019-2020. Initial phases of the project sought to capture and carry stormwater to appropriate drainage without causing sedimentation to the nearby stream.
Phase II replaced an undersized stream crossing with a much larger structure that would improve stormwater flow, reduce erosion and allow for aquatic organism passage. In 2022, the final phase will include regrading and resurfacing to ensure stormwater reaches the features installed in previous phases of the project.
“The road system can have a significant impact on our water quality when stormwater runoff causes sediment from unpaved or poorly paved roads to erode into a nearby stream,” said Agriculture Conservationist Riley Kinney in a statement. “Each year, this program makes a difference in the community by minimizing erosion, preventing or repairing landslides and ultimately improving the health of streams.”
