Pirates farm report for Sept. 3, 2021: Altoona’s Mason Martin breaks up no-hit bid in 9th

INDIANAPOLIS (Triple-A, 50-55) lost to Iowa (Cubs) 9-7. RHP Cam Vieaux (7.67) started and went 1⅔ scoreless innings, striking out two and walking one. RHP Matt Eckelman (2-5, 4.88) ended up with the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) over 2⅓ innings. He also struck out three and walked one. LF Bligh Madris (.262) went 3 for 4, driving in two. 3B Hunter Owen (.228) went 1 for 5 and hit his 16th home run of the season, a three-run shot. SS Diego Castillo (.500) also went deep, hitting his first home run since being promoted to Indianapolis. RF Ka’ai Tom (.219) went 1 for 3 and drove in a run.

Next: Saturday vs. Iowa (Cubs), 7:05 p.m.

ALTOONA (Double-A, 52-51) was shut out, 3-0, by Akron (Indians). RHP Trevor MacGregor (3-9, 6.69) took the loss, allowing two runs, walking three, and striking out three in five innings. RHP Brad Case delivered three solid innings of relief, allowing a run on a solo home run while striking out three. 1B Mason Martin (.251) had Altoona’s only hit, which came with two outs in the top of the ninth.

Next: Saturday at Akron (Indians), 7:05 p.m.

GREENSBORO (High-A, 68-38) beat Hudson Valley (Yankees) 3-2. RHP Carmen Mlodzinski started and pitched 2.2 innings, allowing an unearned run, walking one and striking out three. CF Jonah Davis (.224) went 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs and hit his seventh home run of the season. SS Andres Alvarez (.302) hit his third home run in a 1 for 3 day. RHP Grant Ford (8-4, 5.90) earned the win, allowing a run over 3⅓ innings of relief, while walking a pair and striking out four. RHP Emmanuel Mejia (1.74) struck out the side in the ninth, earning his first save for Greensboro.

Next: Saturday vs. Hudson Valley (Yankees), 6:30 p.m.

BRADENTON (Low-A, 65-39) split a double-header with Tampa (Yankees). In the first game, Bradenton won 4-2. RHP Luis Ortiz (5-3, 3.05) started, allowing one run over six innings, striking out eight and walking a pair. August’s Low-A Player of the Month DH Jack Herman (.278) went 1 for 3 and hit his 11th home run of the season. SS Dariel Lopez (.260) went 2 for 3 with an RBI. RHP Oliver Mateo (4.98) picked up his sixth save while striking out the side in the seventh.

In Game 2, Bradenton lost 4-1. DH Jackson Glenn (.412) went 1 for 3 and had the only hit for the Marauders. C Kyle Wilkie (.293) went 0 for 2 but had an RBI on a bases-loaded walk. RHP Jared Jones (3-4, 3.88), earned the loss, giving up three unearned runs, striking out eight and walking one over five innings.
