Township trucks of all sizes will be on display and open to tour during Hampton’s Touch-A-Truck event.
Police cruisers will blare their sirens and fire engines will be available to climb through, thanks to organizers who planned the free event.
EMS trucks and public works vehicles also will be on display.
The event is from 4 to 6 p.m. on Aug. 18 at the Alcoa pavilion in Hampton Community Park.
“It will be a unique opportunity for kids to get behind the wheel, honk horns, hear sirens and meet the men and women who drive each truck,” said Hampton School Resource Officer Carl Good.
This opportunity will allow children and adults to see the equipment carried on each vehicle, Good said, and gives them the chance to ask questions of each organization and hear stories of what a day in the life of a first responder entails.
“It also gives the first responders an opportunity to interact with the residents outside of an emergency situation,” he said.
In previous years, the program has been part of the township’s Community Day celebration, Manager Chris Lochner said.
“In all cases, it was well received, especially by the younger kids,” he said.
Because of the positive feedback, organizers wanted to present it as a standalone program this year.
“This event is a wonderful way for the residents to interact with this group of public servants,” council President Michael Peters said.
“These men and women serve the township on a 24/7 basis, and I can think of no better way to honor their service than to attend this event and show them your support.”
